Psychology in Film Series: The Witness
Start Date: 10/26/2018Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 10/26/2018End Time: 12:30 PM

Event Description:
The 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, which was described in the newspaper as having been witnessed by 38 neighbors, none of whom helped or called the police, prompted a series of social psychological experiments to investigate the reasons for this. This series of experiments enlightened us about what has come to be known as the bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibility. The documentary by Kitty Genovese's brother, The Witness, calls into question the accuracy of the original reports of the incident, as well as sheds new light on some lesser-known details of Kitty's life and death. This documentary will be used as a springboard for discussion of social psychology and, more specifically, the conditions under which we are more or less likely to help someone in need.
