10:00 AM - 12:30 PM Psychology in Film Series: Gleason

Gleason

is the documentary/video diary of former NFL professional football player Steve Gleason, documenting his diagnosis with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis and ultimately, respiratory failure. The film documents the progression of his illness and how he and his family cope. The film powerfully highlights how we face our own mortality and find meaning in our lives in the most dire of circumstances. The film will be used as a springboard for discussion of finding meaning in life and death, as well as key developmental psychology theories, such as Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s stages of grief and coping with death. No matter our culture, death and dying is something we all will have in common.

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Macomb Symphony Orchestra - Germany - Homeland of Harmony

No group of composers has provided more to the body of orchestral music than those from Germany.  That’s reason enough to focus our sights for the annual concert of ethnic music on the land of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, all of which will be included in the program.  Additionally, MSO will contribute to the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, begun in 1517 in Germany by playing Mendelssohn’s Symphony #5 “Reformation,” a work that incorporates beloved melodies that are cornerstones of German history and culture.
