All Day Testimonios de Una Guerra: Cultural Exhibit (Multi-Day Event)

This exhibit is part of an extended cultural project for the community, one focused on the Mexican Revolution. The Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920 is among the world’s most visually documented revolutions. Coinciding with the birth of filmmaking and the increased mobility offered by the reflex camera, it received extraordinary coverage by photographers. With almost 60 photographs, many never before published, and an authoritative text that delves into the motivations and aesthetics of the photographers who took them, this exhibit represents the most ambitious and historically accurate visual record of the Mexican Revolution.

10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Hamlet
Hamlet is arguably Shakespeare’s greatest play. Written in 1602, it is one of the most complete portrayals of the human psyche that exists in Western Literature. A compelling tale of familial discord, personal ambition, love and revenge, Hamlet has enthralled audiences for 400 years. Mortality and madness are two of the most pronounced themes of Shakespeare’s epic and the characters; Hamlet, Ophelia, Gertrude, and Claudius inhabit a rich landscape replete with deceit, mistrust, and schemes. Four centuries after its premiere, Hamlet continues as one of the classics of the world stage.
Aquila’s productions of Shakespeare have been critically acclaimed by The New Yorker as “beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect.” The New York Times says that Aquila “makes Shakespeare perfectly comprehensible” and hails the company as “an extraordinarily inventive and disciplined outfit.”

In an effort to welcome readers of all levels and languages, the library is proud to present Stories for all Readers:

Esperanza Rising. Select your preferred edition, as all versions of this masterpiece are welcome.

Esperanza thought she’d always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico—she’d always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn’t ready for the hard labor, financial struggles or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances—Mama’s life, and her own, depend on it.
