All Day The Macomb Multicultural International Initiatives Exhibit: Celebrating 10 Years (Multi-Day Event)
Now in their 11th year, the Macomb Multicultural International Initiatives (MMII) was established to create a dialogue on campus of cultural and societal themes, with the hopes of participants gaining global awareness, valuing diversity, and showing empathy towards the marginalized. This exhibit includes banners displaying the growth of MMII over the past 10 years, from both the perspective of participant attendance and commitment from College personnel. The diversity spectrum covered by MMII programming will be exhibited to reflect on the broad understanding the College has of the student, community and international population. The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate what we have achieved, and to consider areas of needed exploration.

9:30 AM - 11:00 AM Celebrating Black History Month - The Fire Next Time & The Fire This Time: Book Discussion
Written in 1963, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin's early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. Addressing his fifteen-year-old namesake on the one hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Baldwin wrote: "You know and I know, that the country is celebrating one hundred years of freedom one hundred years too soon."
Jesmyn Ward knows that Baldwin's words ring true as ever today. In response, she has gathered short essays, memoirs, and a few essential poems to engage the question of race in the United States. The Fire This Time shines a light on the darkest corners of our history, wrestles with our current predicament, and envisions a better future.
