10:00 AM - 11:30 AM Gender Inequality in Philosophy: A Presentation
Speaker: Bradley Wakefield

Plato stated over 2,500 years ago that “men are more inclined to surpass women in all aspects of life.” Aristotle then goes on to say, “women are the incomplete male.” These short-sighted views led many philosophers to the conclusion that women do not belong in philosophy, and more specifically in academia. In fact, these arguments are used repeatedly throughout history. Do they have any substantial ground? How do biological differences imply intellectual differences?
Women do not appear in the philosophical canon until the 20th century. However, women have been studying and practicing philosophy for centuries. Contemporary philosophy courses rarely teach the female philosophers as a pivotal part of the history of philosophy. Professor of Philosophy Bradley Wakefield will argue that the biological differences make little impact on intellectual processes. He will then explore the plethora of women who have made significant contributions to philosophy through other male philosophers. All of whom deserve recognition in the Western canon. An explanation to why these inaccurate arguments made such an impact on Western thought and much more will be presented.
