  • Land Surveying Technology

We will have tours, food, and an opportunity for high school students to meet Macomb students and faculty. Due to space limitations, we are limited to the first 100 students registered.

Taught by the Macomb Community Domestic Violence Council’s Prevention Subcommittee, this seminar offers simple, accurate information on survivors of domestic violence, battering behaviors, and what we all can do to end domestic violence in Macomb County.

At the end of the session, participants will have the opportunity to join the Domestic Violence Peer Ambassador Project, a group of messengers/representatives with the most accurate and up-to-date information about domestic violence to share with their peers. Domestic Violence Peer Ambassadors serve as a safe contact for survivors or significant others of survivors to obtain basic information and referrals for services. Additionally, they will share information about domestic violence with those around them.

The Culinary Arts program prepares students for technical and managerial careers in restaurant, catered, and institutional food services. The Associate of Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts and the Certificate in Culinary Arts: Culinary Management are accredited by the American Culinary Foundation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC). With their practical skills and creative talent, Macomb culinary students and graduates have landed jobs at premier establishments, and have brought home twenty-four medals from the prestigious International Culinary Olympics held every four years in Germany.

What connects all people of the world on a daily basis like food within their culture? Students within the MCCA International Kitchen course research indigenous ingredients, sustainability and societal significance of cuisine, and customary recipes from a given country or region, and complete projects, all the while learning culinary techniques as well as prepping and executing these meals at Center Stage Restaurant within the Lorenzo Cultural Center.

Come view their projects, photographs, and pertinent informational materials related to “breaking of the bread” and the lives and traditions of people around the world. Also included in the exhibit is a showing of the Meridian Corporation’s Global Cuisine: Indian and Japanese Culinary Arts. Exhibit questions will pertain to the student projects, literary materials, and the film, all available at the site.

Women have had a long hard road to being recognized as chefs or even allowed to work in the culinary industry. Traditionally, women have been responsible for making simple meals in the home, but not often was "cuisine" applied to female cookery...”

The First Destination Transportation Packaging Initiatives (FDTPI) is one of DLA’s “Big Ideas” designed to generate substantial savings over the five-year Fiscal Year Defense Plan. Its objective is to leverage industry capabilities through the inherent economies of scale of the government’s supply chain. The initiative focuses on reducing acquisition costs for eligible procurements by simplifying packaging requirements, and streamlining the logistical network. FDTPI will unbundle First Destination Transportation(FDT), and First Destination Packaging (FDP) costs from the acquisition price of new-procurement material and utilize government personnel, or contracted services to provide freight and/or MIL-STD packaging.

The Initiatives present focus is primarily on Class IX material, and some Class IV and VII material. The following supply chains currently participating in FDTPI are: Aviation, Construction and Equipment, Industrial Hardware, and Land and Maritime.

FDTPI Benefits:

 •FDP will increase the number of capable small businesses in the DLA’s supply network by reducing packaging costs and fostering competition.

 •FDT will allow the DLA to consolidate shipping which will reduce costs and the carbon footprint.

•FDT will clarify the cost associated with producing a product vs. those associated with shipping.

Join us as Kevin Grimes explains the role of the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) and the expectations of a contractor’s accounting system.

Mr. Grimes is a Compliance Consultant with CFO Leasing, Inc.  He has over 10 years of accounting experience, and specializes in DCAA compliance and accounting system implementations and migrations. This program is designed to assist business professionals in establishing an accounting system that will be found acceptable by the federal government.

7:30 AM - 12:00 PM Coffee and Contracting Event Series: Dodd-Frank and Conflict Minerals

With the many laws and acts that are discussed and passed within the U.S. during any given year it can be difficult for small businesses to ascertain which ones are pertinent within the realm of government contracts, and which ones are not. One such act that was signed into law is the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (referred to as Dodd-Frank). Judging from the title of this act one may not see the tie to government contracts, but at least one part of this act can, and does affect government contractors - conflict minerals.
 
Conflict minerals consist of four minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) that are mined from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and surrounding areas. The goal of this portion of Dodd-Frank is to track the sources of these minerals to mitigate their inclusion in products if they were in fact mined from a conflict zone.

Conflict minerals are commonly found in electronics, automotive, and aerospace which covers a broad range of items that are supplied to the government. From a small business manufacturer perspective, the official SEC conflict mineral source reporting mechanisms most likely do not apply, as they only apply to publicly traded companies. However, that does not guarantee you are out of the woods yet!

What is WAWF?  WAWF is a convenient online solution that allows vendors to electronically submit invoices and receiving reports, allows the Government to perform inspection and acceptance of goods and services, and interfaces with payment systems to receive transactions electronically. With WAWF your company can:

• Submit invoices and receiving reports in real-time, directly via the Internet, or by using File Transfer Protocol or Direct Electronic Data  Interchange.

• Get paid more quickly by reducing lost or misplaced documents, and route documents faster.

• Have total visibility of document status and be able to determine when you will be paid for services rendered on your contract(s).

• Receive system-generated emails advising you of action taken by the government inspection and acceptance officials, or if an invoice is rejected.

Why use WAWF?  In 2001 the government passed a law stating that all vendors doing business with the Department of Defense must use an electronic method for submitting invoices and supporting documentation (Public Law 106-398).  In 2003 the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) was updated to include DFARS Clause 252.232.7003.  This clause requiring use of electronic invoicing tools has been inserted into many of the contracts you currently hold with the government.

Over the past decade, the United States has been faced with a rise in school violence. The most recent school shootings in Connecticut, Georgia and Pennsylvania have raised the awareness of this national issue. School districts and police departments alike are seeking solutions that would help deter and prevent school violence through intervention techniques that focus on improving school safety. This 12-hour course offers a systemic approach to school safety that helps to clarify the roles of school districts, police departments, the community and the family in response to the increase of violence in the schools.

Clemens.
